Cargotec Elevate Learning Program

The challenge

Cargotec is the leading provider of cargo and load handling solutions. Headquartered in Finland, Cargotec operates in more than 100 countries.

The Finance Academy in Cargotec is the epicenter for Finance talent development.
To drive a close alignment between Finance and the business, an elaborate Business Partnering Handbook was designed and launched.

However, the handbook did not trigger a change in mindset and way of working among employees.

Consequently, Cargotec asked BPI to help “make the handbook come to life”.

The solution

ELEVATE program

Cargotec & BPI co-created the ELEVATE program, a learning program that helps to upskill business controllers in capability areas like problem solving, communication, and sales techniques. Furthermore, participants got to work on and solve a real-life business challenge in groups. Over 4 years, more than 140 people have taken part in the program.

Competency development framework

To stimulate a “learning culture” we also co-developed a Competency Development Framework. This covered:

  1. Finance Competency Model

  2. Learning opportunities catalog

  3. Employee/manager dialogue guide and template

E-learning

To strengthen Financial understanding and literacy in the business, we developed a “Finance for non-Finance” e-learning training that breaks down, how different business activities in Cargotec translate into money and how individuals can each contribute to impact value creation.

The Impact

The ELEVATE program has a strong brand inside Cargotec. As a Cargotec internal survey shows, 61%  of respondents consider FBP activities as “extremely important.” Learner feedback is strong, and we have created a common language and a way of working.

As part of the program, more than 20 impact cases have been prepared and presented to the Finance Board, and many have subsequently been implemented to generate tangible impact.

It has moreover strengthened the network and collaboration across business units.

The overall visibility and value of Business Partnering activities in Kalmar Hiab and McGregor. According to the above-mentioned survey, 45% of the respondents see significant improvement in FBP activities over the past 4 years.

Finally, the “Finance for non-Finance” e-learning was the most popular E-learning on the learning portal. Over the last 6 months, 840 employees have accessed the e-learning module, and the average score for the course is 4.7 out of 5.
